The cement industry is one of the most important supporting elements of construction sector and it has a
very important role in the economy of countries. On the other hand, in this sector, the cost of energy contains
a very important part of the total production costs. Therefore, to reduce production costs without negatively
affecting product quality, the most important possibility is to use energy efficiently. In other words, energy
efficiency is an inexpensive opportunity to reduce production costs and even pollutant emissions of the
plant while the other solutions are expensive and inefficient. At cement production, there are a lot of sub
processes such as raw material extraction, crushing, grinding, pre-heater phase, kiln phase, cooling, final
grinding, packing and shipping. So, the plant is an integrated system consisting of a number of sub-units.
Moreover, these subsystems are in remote locations to each other. The control of such very large integrated
systems is difficult and it requires to use Distributed Advanced Control Systems. In this study, Industrial
Internet of Things (IIoT) has been used for improve energy efficiency in cement plants. The IIoT is the use
of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in industry and it particularly is suitable for large enterprises.
Because, the Industrial Internet, IIoT incorporates machine learning and big data technology, harnessing
the sensor data, machine-to-machine (M2M) communication and automation technologies that have existed
in industrial settings for years. This study is the first step of a very comprehensive project and is a general
framework. In the study, firstly the energy use of plant has been analyzed and the current energy efficiency
has been evaluated. After, a model based on energy efficiency has developed by using IIoT. It will be
expected that this model will be the basis for future studies.
